First Let me say that this is long overdue... Please accept my humble apologies.
Trustkill's first release was a split with Watermark, a benefit for homelessness, and an Embrace tribute. Knowing me, I probably bought it for the Avail track, or maybe even Lifetime. Regardless, this has an all-star lineup of mid-90's hardcore all covering the Embrace album, including Nations on Fire, Current, Undertow, Groundwork, and Rancid.
All the bands take Embrace and make it their own, leaving the listener wonder "Where have I heard this before?" But the highlight for me is really Current's version of Dance of Days with Matt Weeks' operatic singing. It shows the limitations of Ian MacKaye's singing at the time, and though his singing has improved greatly since then, I can't help but wonder what it would have sounded like if Current would have covered the whole album.
Groundwork's track is incredibly heavy. Rancid somehow manages to make Embrace sound like, well... Rancid. Altogether this is a great look at mid-90's punk and hardcore, along with a loving tribute to a pioneer emo band.

this was one of the first post on my blog.
glad to see other people still rep this comp years later... the Current song is almost better than the original..
I think it is better than the original. I'm not that big of an Embrace fan, mostly due to Ian's crappy vocals.
Blasphemy? I don't know... I don't really care though.
haha!! yeah, i agree... songs by Avail, Lifetime, Sparkmarker, Blindfold, Current and even Rancid are all better than the orginals..
it kills me how many young kids really sweat Embrace, cuz I personally never liked them that much... always puttin on Land of Greed instead. or Rites of Spring... now that band ruled.
Glad I'm not alone...
Yeah, Rites of Spring were much better. I'd even say that I prefer Beefeater to Embrace. And Dag Nasty, well... Can I Say is fucking brilliant.
yea Can I Say is one of my favorite Dischord releases. I didnt appreciate RoS until college. I mean, i liked em, but i didnt appreciate, ya know?
Dag Nasty just clicked with me when I was in high school but Rites of Spring somehow gets better with age...(im 31 by the way)
Thanks so much for this! Haven't heard it in a long time.
